How to Do Keyword Research for a Singapore Business (Step-by-Step)

30-second version

Start with Google autocomplete and 'People also ask' — both are free and show you exactly what Singapore users are searching. Layer in a free tool like Ubersuggest for volume data. Build a keyword map before writing a single page.

Keyword research is the foundation of any SEO or content strategy. Without it, you're writing content in the dark — hoping someone searches for what you wrote. With it, you know exactly what Singapore customers are asking, in what volume, and how hard each term is to rank for.

Step 1: Start with Google autocomplete

Open Google in an incognito window (so your history doesn't influence results) and type your service + Singapore. Let Google's autocomplete suggestions appear — these are real searches by real users. Note every suggestion: they're all viable keyword targets.

Example: typing "web design singapore" in autocomplete reveals "web design singapore price", "web design singapore cheap", "web design singapore sme", "web design singapore portfolio" — each a distinct content opportunity.

Step 2: Mine 'People also ask'

Search your core keyword and scroll to the "People also ask" box. These are related questions Google has identified as commonly asked. Each one is a potential blog post or FAQ section. Click each question to expand it — more questions appear, revealing an entire content map around your topic.

Step 3: Use free tools for volume data

  • Google Keyword Planner (free with a Google Ads account): shows monthly search volume ranges and competition level
  • Ubersuggest (free tier): shows volume, SEO difficulty, and related keywords
  • Answer the Public (free queries/day): visualises questions around a keyword
  • Google Search Console (if your site has existing traffic): shows which terms you're already appearing for

Understanding search intent

Building a keyword map

A keyword map assigns one primary keyword to each page on your site. No two pages should target the same keyword (keyword cannibalism). Structure it like this:

  • Homepage: your broadest brand/service term ("web design singapore")
  • Service pages: one primary service keyword each ("shopify website singapore")
  • Blog posts: informational and long-tail terms ("how much website cost singapore 2026")
  • Location pages (if relevant): suburb + service combinations
